Pre Upgrade Requisites:

• So, before you proceed to apply this Cyanogen mod custom ROM 7.1 on your HTC Incredible S, you will have to backup the data which is there in the phone as in the due course of the firmware update the data which is there in the phone will get lost. So, for making it simple we have mentioned some of the tips and procedures with which you can create a backup of all the data and then you can restore then once the firmware is updated.

SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log - Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names”

• Now, as soon as you have created the backup of all the data you will now need to proceed to charge your phone to the minimum of 95% or else  the battery performance will be hampered after the firmware update and will take 3 – 5 charge cycles to stabilize the battery life.
• Up next is you will have to turn Off the S so that it doesn’t interrupt the process of the Cyanogen mod installation. But before that you will have to ensure that the USB debugging Mode is enabled in the phone which can be done from the path of “Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging”.
• Once the USB debugging is turned On, you will have to download the HTC Sync driver software in your computer and then you need to install the same in your Windows based computer (Mac computers are not supported). After this you will have to disable the fast boot from the path “Settings > Power > Fast boot”.
• Now, you will need to go to the product page of HTC Beta Key Generator Site where you will have to scroll down and need to click on the option of “Download for Windows” after which a file will be prompted for downloading, download the same and after that you will see a notification named “Beta Key” wherein you need to fill in the details like your operating system, your device name, HBOOT Version and also the serial number of the phone. So, as soon as all the details are entered, you will now have to click on the “Generate key” as shown in the below image.
• In the next step you will get the beta key after which you will just need to connect the phone with the help of USB cable to the computer. Now, when you have got the beta key, open the Revolutionary beta application in your computer which you downloaded from the above mentioned site and need to enter the correct beta key which you have got in the above process.
• Now, you will see that the HTC Incredible S will be temporarily rooted and then the S-Off will be gained in the device and then custom recovery image will be installed automatically. It will take up to 15 minutes to install the custom recovery image in the phone.
• After the process is completed, you are now ready to install the Cyanogen mod ROM in your phone for which we will see the procedure in the next page. For your convenience, we will see two different methods with which you can install the same, so just in case if one method fails in an unlikely event, you can install with another method.

Procedure to update HTC Incredible S with Gingerbread 2.3.7 (Cyanogen Mod 7.1):

• Now, when you have followed all the instructions which are mentioned in the last page, you are now all set to apply this Cyanogen mod 7.1 update. We will see two different methods to apply this update.
• Download the latest version of Cyanogen mod 7.1 for incredible S and also you will need to download the latest version of Google Apps Zip file from here to your computer. Please note that upon downloading the same in your computer you should not unzip the same or modify / rename the files or else there is a high probability that you may end up with issues in updating as the file may not be recognized.
• Now, you will have to turn Off your HTC Incredible S so that you can then enter into the recovery mode. The recovery mode in the Incredible S can be entered by pressing the volume Down Key and simultaneously you need to press the Power button after which you will see the screen as shown below which is just for the representational purpose.
• Now, after this you will have to press the Volume down Key and then you will have to choose the option of “Clear Storage”. The option can be selected by pressing the power button. Once you are done with it, you now need to choose the option of “install zip from SD Card” and select “Choose zip from SD Card” after which there will be a list of files shown which are there in the phone out of which you need to choose the file which is named as “HTC_Incredible_S_CM_7.1_2.3.7.zip” after which the process of firmware update will begin.

• Just in case if you are getting Signature error in the last step then it means that the device is not rooted successfully and the same needs to be rooted again whose procedure is given in the last page.
• So, as soon as the firmware update gets done, you will now have to proceed to install another zip file which is Google Apps, now to install this you will have to choose the file of GoogleApps.zip from the path of “install zip from SD Card” > “Choose zip from SD Card” in the recovery mode.
• So once you finish the process of updating the phone, you will now need to select the option of “++++Go back++++” and then you will have to select the option of “Reboot System Now” for restarting the phone.

So, that’s it in this way you can successfully updated the firmware version of your phone to the latest version of Gingerbread 2.3.7 on your HTC Incredible S. ROM Manager method to apply Cyanogen mod 7.1 Update:

• So, before you proceed you will have to first ensure that from the Android Market place, you will have to download and install the ROM Manager in your phone. So, once you are done with that you will now have to tap on the option of “Download ROM” option from the menu and choose the option of “Cyanogen mod” and then select the Cyanogen Mod option from the Menu along with the Google Apps.
• After this once the ROM Manager finishes downloading the ROM then you will be asked to backup the current ROM which is installed in your phone. It’s better to create a backup of the same as just in case if anything wrong happens to the phone then you will be in a position to restore the phone in the last best known configuration. After that it may ask you for the super user access, simply select the option of “Allow” so that it doesn’t create any issues in updating the same. After this you will also have to install the Google Apps in your phone.
• So, now after this the HTC Incredible S device will be booting up wherein you will now need to choose the option of ++++Go Back++++ and then select “Reboot System Now” for restarting the phone and then you will see that the firmware has been successfully updated.
• Note: So, once the device has been successfully updated, you now need to ensure that the APN Settings are restored successfully or else you will not be able to access the internet as well as the 3G.
